Nora Garcia's mother wakes up to silence every morning since her blue parrot Paco flew the coop outside a League City Cracker Barrel in October. A month later, the bird remains on the lam — and his family is now hoping for a "Christmas miracle" that brings Paco home by the year's end, Garcia said.
"My mother traveled with the bird everywhere," Garcia said. "If the bird can't come to visit, then mom can't come to visit."
That philosophy has since proved detrimental to Garcia's mother. The woman and her other daughter, Garcia's sister, were traveling along Interstate 45 near Main Street in League City on Oct. 21 when their car broke down, Garcia said. The sister called Garcia for help, who showed up soon after started to move their things into her car.
"We were putting the cage in my vehicle, and somehow Paco managed to, with his little mouth, open one of the little doors, and he flew out," Garcia said. "We're trying really hard to see if maybe somebody did catch him and kept him.
"I hope he didn't die," Garcia said. "It hasn't been that cold. You just never know."
